Çağıl HARMANDAR’s practice-based research at Tokyo University of the Arts in Yokohama is focused on concepts of reality in relation to film, painting, and animation. The role of empathy and bodily sensation is examined as contributing factors to the “realistic effect” of animation, and abstract animation is used as a technique to understand how animation can “micro-control” our experience as well as our construction of realities.
*This is a lecture practice by Çağıl Harmandar who is planning to present in the Nippon Connection Film Festival, the biggest platform for Japanese cinema worldwide.

Marieke Peeters has been researching obake yashiki – or haunted house attractions – and their manipulation of immersion. PARADISE AIR sets the stage for an obake yashiki that explores the interplay between comfort and horror. The memories of former guests of this hotel have grown into the furniture, bled into the bedsheets, grown into the bathtub, and by resurrecting traces of its past, new stories are created.
