Mrugen Rathod

A visual artist, studied masters from the department of sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU, Vadodara, India in 2010. His artistic practice oscillates between social, political, cultural and ecological concerns, addressing questions of their implications. Often manifested in more than one medium, including drawings, sculptures, installations, video, as well as performances. His studio based as well as out door practice evolved in multiple branches, involves projects based on lengthy research, seen in his multi-media site specific and public art works such as Shore (2015) in Odisha; Ganga Fal (2013) at Bangladesh; Mistaken case of Turtles (2011) at Fort Kochi beach. His ability of quickly adapting to various concerns and locations can be observed through his works at residencies like Art OMI, NY (2012); SM Sultan, Bangladesh (2013); Abhisaran, SAARC country Art Workshop at Jindal Steel, Vijaynagara, Hampi, Karnataka (2014); Yatoo, S. Korea (2015); GNAP Yatoo (2016); Montalvo Art Center, CA, USA (2018) and Green Body – a Nature Art Symposium at Sonjai – Do Island, South Korea.
His awards and fellowships include FICA PAG, Delhi (2015); Prana Fellowship (2012); Kashi Art Fellowship (2011) and the most recent is Generator Co-operative Art Grant by Gallery Experimenter (2020). He was nominated for COAL Art Award Paris’ special project “oceans” with Cop21 (2015).

Mrugen draws inspirations from the sundry of places he visits and the people he meets. His experiences and investigations merge to yield works where the subject, material and intent to make an impact.
