Gabriele Muguruza
2026.07 - 2026.08

We are pleased to announce an open studio event featuring the artists currently staying at PARADISE AIR. For the first time, the event will take the form of a guided tour through PARADISE AIR, giving visitors the chance to explore each artist’s studio and practice.
Gabriele Muguruza, invited in collaboration with the Department of Culture of Bizkaia*, will present experimental drawings developed during a two-month residency.
Charlotte Yao will lead a puppet-performance workshop open to everyone. Participants are invited to create paper puppets using family photographs and share personal stories through performance.
Returning artists Olga Sanina and François Brunner, who previously stayed at PARADISE AIR in 2025 to research trees that survived the Great Kanto Earthquake and the air raids of World War II, are back to continue their research and develop new work.
Don’t miss this opportunity to visit the studios of four artists currently living and creating together at PARADISE AIR!
* As part of a provincial award program that supports the careers of emerging artists in Bizkaia, the prize includes an opportunity to undertake an artist residency in Japan. Over the past six years, six award-winning artists have stayed at PARADISE AIR.

Artists: Gabriele Muguruza, Olga Sanina, François Brunner, Charlotte Yao
At 4 pm, we will begin a guided tour of the resident artists’ studios.
Some of the works currently in progress are extremely fragile, so they will only be available for viewing for a limited time while accompanied by the artists. If you would like to join the studio tour, please gather before the tour begins.
Artists: Gabriele Muguruza, Olga Sanina, François Brunner
Following the studio tour, a workshop will begin at 5 pm in the 5F Lounge.
Using family photographs, participants will enjoy cutting, collaging, and creating paper puppets to tell new stories. Participants will cut out and combine elements from copies of their family photographs or other meaningful images to create a paper puppet and retell a family story from their own perspective. Original photographs will not be cut, and digital images can be printed on site for use in the workshop.
Artist: Charlotte Yao
What to Bring
Please bring several photographs that hold personal meaning for you. These may include family photographs or images of people, places, objects, and moments connected to a family memory—a house, a birthday cake, a favourite playground ride, or anything else that carries a story.
Participants will bring together elements from several images, including figures, backgrounds, buildings, spaces, and objects, so bringing a varied selection is encouraged.
All photographs will be copied or printed on site. Original photographs will not be cut, and digital images stored on a phone are equally suitable.
