Lilian Canright, a member of the Art Translators Collective (ATC), led an experimental workshop that reexamined the act of “translation” through images rather than language.
Introducing her recent artistic practice, she guided participants in exploring methods of generating new imagery by “degrading” images. Using digital applications, the workshop offered a hands-on experience in transforming visual material through processes of distortion and manipulation.
Participants were invited to bring an image they wished to “break,” and worked on editing it on their computers. By degrading the images—or even converting them into sound—they explored how original images could be transformed into something entirely new. This process of change closely parallels the act of translation, giving rise to multiple “translations” from a single image.
At the end of the workshop, participants shared their “broken images” and creative processes with one another. Working with familiar visual material, the session became an opportunity to reflect—both casually and deeply—on the nature of translation and imagery.
The ATC team also presented the program “The Death of Translation” as part of Theater Commons ’26, and this residency was organized in connection with that initiative. As part of the program, Lilian performed “What are we doing where are we going.”
