Kenichi Shikata

Born in Kyoto, 1983. Kenichi Studied under Asao Tokolo since 2004 and graduated from Waseda University Art and Architecture School in 2007. He mainly creates three-dimensional works and photographs using patterns composed of simple geometry and characteristics of materials. He has worked on a number of outdoor exhibitions in parks and harbors, as well as permanent installations such as public art. His works are completed when the patterns and materials, which make up the work, interact with their location and an expression appears. By building a relationship between the artwork and its location, he aims to make his work become a device that creates a new landscape.

His artworks include “Collecting view in the well,” Ube Biennale Sculpture Hill (2019), “bubbles in flow” and “soragiwa,” Kansai International Airport (2018), “GLOWING GROWING GROUND,” Osaka International Airport (2018), “starry sky view,” Asahicho Clinic (2017).

His artwork has been shown and awarded in numerous festivals and exhibitions, including Yamaguchi Bank prize at the 28th Ube Biennale, Ube Biennale Sculpture Hill, Ube city (2019), Prize for Excellence and Bungo Ono Award at the 13th and 14th Oita Asian Sculpture Exhibition, Fumio Asakura Museum of Sculpture, Bungo-Ono city (2018 – 2019), Shikata Kenichi -Ray-, Seibu Shibuya (2017), Grand Prize at East-west Art Award 2015, London (2015), Silver Award at the 13th Kajima Sculpture Competition, Tokyo (2014), Second Prize at Kobe Biennale 2013, Kobe (2013).
