PARADISE AIR LONGSTAY Program 2017

[1.ApplicationOverview]

PARADISE AIR currently seeks individuals/groups who wish to create artistic works while residing at the PARADISE AIR studios in Matsudo City(Chiba Prefecture,Japan),as part of the the LONGSTAY Program 2017.

PARADISE AIR is an artist in residence program that was established in 2013.

It has since hosted over 100 artists/art groups at its studios during short and long-term residency programs. Whilst many Japanese cities developed under the rule off eudallords and samurai who worked to expand the rule of the shogun at eduring the Edo Period, Matsudo instead flourished as anin depend ent city untethered by feudalistic growth. Asaninn town, the prosperity of Matsudo stemmed from the foot traffic of the Mito kaido High way and from the bustling port trade that took place along the Edo River. Even more in fluential was the the character of the local people Matsudo has long been fabled for exceptional townsfolk and the area is still well known for its remarkable hospitality and obliging nature.

[2.ProgramTheme]

TheLONGSTAYProgram2017isnowopenforapplicationsfromforeignartistsofalldisciplines.Thethemeofthisyear’sprogramis‘TOUR’.PleasesubmitaplanthatrelatesdirectlytoMatsudoCity’stangible‘place’intimeandspace,andthattakesadvantageoftheresourcesofthelocalarea.Therearenolimitationsplaceduponthestyleorformofartisticoutputcreatedduringtheprogram.Thisworldiscurrentlyinastateoftransitionandmanydivisionsarecomingforthbeforeourveryeyes.Thefreemovementofpeopleandoriginalideasactsasameansofbridgingtheseseenandunseengaps(…orperhapsitonlyservestoactualizethemfurther?).Theselectedartist(s)willtraveltoPARADISEAIRfromtheircorneroftheearth,involvethemselvesincreativeproductionfora3monthperiod,andthenmoveontotheirnextportofcall.Wehopethatthisseriesofeventsinitsentiretywillbecometheirnewestworkofart.PARADISEAIRisbasedinMatsudoCity.DespitebeingonthedoorstepoftheTokyoMetropolis,timepassesdifferentlyhere.Matsudohasadistinctfeelthatwillmostdefinitelybeofcontrastyourcurrentlocation.Byassigningthetheme‘TOUR’tothisyear’sresidency,ouraimisforMatsudo’suniquenesstobebroughttothesurfacefromtheviewpointofanartist(+visitor/traveler).PARADISEAIRwillprovidecomprehensivesupportthroughouttheresidencytoassisttheresidentartisttoturnthecharming‘place’thattheyhavediscoveredhereintoworksofart.Wearecallingforambitiousproposalsthatimagineanewrelationshipbetweencity,person,andtime.Jumpingfromtheresidencetothetownship,weencourageyoutomakeMatsudoyourfield.MoreinformationaboutMatsudoCitycanbefoundatthefollowinglinkhttp://www.city.matsudo.chiba.jp/profile/InternationalPortal/

[5.ApplicantConditions]

Applicants must meet the following conditions:
Noth old Japanese citizenship
Enjoy engaging in dialogues with the town
Currently live and work as an artist
Be willing and able to engageing enuine cultural exchange with regional artists and local residents during the term of residency
Have a desire to connect with local residents and conduct regular fieldwork and/or interviews
Be in good physical and mental health
Have flexibility regarding program scheduling,rules,andadministration.
Be able to conduct everyday life in Japanese and/or English
Applicants may plan to work collaboratively with an artist in the Matsudo region if they wish

[6.Support]

PARADISEAIR supports the artists/artgroups finacially and technically as followsRoundtrip transportation from the artist’s home to Matsudo Accommodationat the PARADISE AIR residencyUp to ¥200,000 forproductioncosts,tobedecidedviaprojectproposalDailystipendof¥3,000/day*90days=¥270,000Costsassociatedwithlocaltalks,performances,exhibitionsetc.CostsoftransportingworksofartcreatedduringtheprogramLocalsupportforactivitiesandtheproductionofworksCostsassociatedwithadvertisementandpromotionsPLEASENOTE:Wekindlyaskthatapplicantsplantoparticipateintheprogramwiththeirownhealthinsurance.PARADISEAIRisnotabletoserveasaninsurerorguarantor.WhilewegenerallyaccommodateartistswhocometoMatsudoalone,wewelcomeapplicationsfromthosewhowishtobringalongtheirspouseand/orchildren.Pleaseindicateclearlyintheapplicationifyouwishtodoso.Duringtheprogramweaskartiststoarrangetheirownmealsusingtheirdailystipend.Therearemanylocalrestaurantsnearbyandakitchenetteisalsoavailableforuseintheresidence.

Copy right and ownership of anywork created during the program will remain that of the artist.
