Map-Making Workshop: “Between the River and the Cliff”

We invited artist Rick Yamakawa to lead a workshop in which participants revisited the landscape of Matsudo through their memories, using a “geographical model” of the area surrounding the Matsudo Civic Theater.

Viewed from the theater, the venue, the city center of Matsudo spreads out across the lowlands between the Edogawa River to the west and the cliffs of the Shimosa Plateau to the east.

In this workshop, using the lowlands “between the river and the cliff” as our field, we invited participants to walk through places that held special meaning for them. While actually looking at the scenery, they shaped their impressions of the town and their memories using clay.

We then placed the “landscapes” they brought back onto the “geographical model” and, through conversation, collaboratively created an original three-dimensional map that could only emerge from the group gathered that day.
