PARADISE HOUR is an open studio event held by artists staying at PARADISE AIR, sharing their experiences in Matsudo.
In July 2024, we held an event focused on talks by the resident artists.

Two artists from the National Institute of Design (NID) in India, Sahil Thappa and Javed Ali, held a workshop titled “Kaizo Futures: What objects might you find in Japan in the future?” at Tokyo University of the Arts on Friday, July 5, prior to their talk. This workshop marked the conclusion of their one-month stay, and they also presented a report on the workshop and their stay.

The other resident artist, Hong Kong-born video artist Yu Shuk Pui Bobby, introduced how her stay at PARADISE AIR influenced and inspired her upcoming large-scale solo exhibition scheduled for 2025 in Oslo. She also shared her research on the history of toilets, which is essential for her work, and her past works, attracting the attention of the participants!

SDGs x Arts | Report presentation on Tokyo University of the Arts collaborative program by Sahil Thappa, Javed Ali
“Arts for our Futures”

Time: 18:30-19:30 (JST)
Language: English

Sahil and Javed participated in the Tokyo University of the Arts’ invitation program [SDGs x Arts | Semester Research Residence Program 2024 Tokyo] from the National Institute of Design (NID) in India. Specializing in product design, they conducted research on Japanese design and Mingei (folk art) for about a month. NID collaborates with the Indian government and local communities to develop sustainable social infrastructure and production systems in traditional crafts across India. During their stay, they shared new perspectives on design discovered in Japan, as well as products like “gachagacha” and other items that caught their interest, while reflecting on their experiences in India. On the day of the event, we connected online with India, and family and friends also participated, leading to lively discussions!
Additionally, they introduced the works created during the workshop “Kaizo Futures: What objects might you find in Japan in the future?” held at Tokyo University of the Arts, along with scenes from the event.
