Documenta, the world’s largest contemporary art festival, is held every five years. For the first time ever, an art collective from Asia was chosen as artistic director of Documenta 15, attracting attention to an unprecedented form of arts festival.
Rick Yamakawa, who visited Kassel to report for the architecture-specific web magazine Kenchiku Toron, Koji Kato from PARADISE AIR, who visited as an artist participating in a programme in which the university is involved, and Junpei Mori, who moderated the session, discussed the events in Kassel from different perspectives.
This project was held at the International House as a related event of the ‘Former Geidai Dormitory Utilisation Project’ (*).

(*) What is the ‘Former Geidai Dormitory Utilisation Project’?
The ‘Former Geidai Dormitory Utilisation Project’ is a project that aims to re-use the International House, a student dormitory of Tokyo University of the Arts (hereafter referred to as Geidai), located in Shinmatsudo, Matsudo City.
The International House has been used by many students, mainly international students, and has continued to interact with local residents. However, due to the ageing of the facilities and a decrease in the number of students due to the pandemic, the dormitory was closed in March this year.
PARADISE AIR and the omusubi estate are working together to explore new uses for this vacant facility.
The first step is to start experimental stays and hold events in an attempt to explore the possibility of a new expansion through culture and art.
