Brazilian artist and color researcher Laura Carvalho presents her latest series, Uncovered Landscapes, of images taken of Matsudo city over the span of one week. The project is an observation of local colors and how they relate within the context of contemporary Japan whose challenge it is to find a connection between traditional and newer colors.
The art project proposes the following questions: what could local colours reveal about the culture of a city? Would these be the colors gathered from Matsudo? What is the connection between colors of the city and contemporary Japanese colors? Is the local palette changing or could we perceive them as traditional hues?
Photo records, field visits and exchanges with local people are a way to understand these uncovered local landscapes.

The two-hour interactive workshop addresses the dialogue between color and local landscape within Matsudo city. It is also an opportunity to compare popular Brazilian colors with the Japanese palette: a cultural exchange that explores the concept “geography of colors” (by the architects Jean-Phillipe and Dominique Lenclos) and how it determines the local architecture, objects and daily life.
There will be a hands-on component to the workshop whereby participants will use pictures taken by the artist and local residents, which have been shared on Paradise AIR’s Instagram (#matsudo_color), as a foundation to collectively create a color palette of Matsudo city.
