Born in Tokyo 1980. Utako works internationally for her scholarly and artistic pursuit in the poetics of untranslatability. She obtains her Ph.D. in Fine Art through the interdisciplinary Centre for Ideas, VCA&MCM, University of Melbourne, and is a 2018 Japanese government Creative Fellow. She currently lectures for and assists educational and research programs in Japanese tertiary institutions. Her solo show includes “Form Poem” (2023, 5.gallery, Santa Fe, USA) and “Reminiscent of long gone by” (2018, Sutton Gallery, Naarm/Melbourne); her residency includes Youkobo Art Space (2019, Tokyo), Arquetopia (2014, Mexico) and Bank Art NYK(2013, Yokohama); and her curatorial project includes “Immanent Landscape” (2010-12, West Space, Oyama City Kurumaya Museum of Art, Japan Foundation Sydney).
