Jez riley French

Focusing on sound as material and subject, Jez explores place, sounds outside of our attention and the act & art of listening. Alongside installations, performances, compositions, scores, texts and lens-based work, he also gives talks, runs workshops and has developed an acclaimed range of specialist microphones and techniques now widely used across the arts. His often highly personal work is recognised for expanding durational & micro-listening, and architectural, plant, soil, aquatic and infrasound recording as key elements of contemporary sound practices. Key works involve the inner sounds of the plants, minerals dissolving, buildings resonating, the infrasound of domestic spaces and the tonal resonances of natural and human objects in the landscape. “I also collaborate with my daughter, the artist Pheobe riley Law, including on a publication focusing on the design and detail of spaces between buildings in Japan, a series of improvised performances and other projects combining sound works and texts.” Work has included commissions and performances for Tate Modern (UK), Paradise Air (Japan), Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (Japan), Spikersuppa Lydgalleri, Oslo (Norway), Baltic (UK), Steklenik (Slovenia), Museo Reina Sofia (Spain), Catalyst Arts (N. Ireland), The Whitworth Gallery (UK) , Artisphere (USA), Harpa (Iceland), Mengi (Iceland), The Wired Lab (Australia), Mullae Art Space (Korea), q-02 (Belgium) etc.
