before
My name is Elise Broadway and In the spring of 2016 I will graduate from the University of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine arts with a BFA and certificate degree. During my time at the University of Pennsylvania I minored in East Asian studies where I took time to explore Japanese art and religious history. Through my studio practice, I like to explore the possibilities of combining representational elements, stylistic mark-making, abstract imagery, and elements of collage. My practice often starts with a documentarian process: gathering information, photographs, objects, and experience. I then take my findings back to my studio space and translate them into paintings and drawings. I am very excited to spend time at Paradise AIR and hope to learn more about specific elements of Japanese culture during my stay.

1. Elise Broadway

2. A recent body of work of mine has been constructing portraits of loved ones and friends by making dolls of them with discarded snack packaging.

3. I really would love to make a lot of friends and connections with others and learn about others’ reasons for choosing the Paradise AIR Program. I want to gather as much imagery as possible during my stay of the O-Bon festivities and possibly other summer events.
4. My favorite foods are Uni Sushi, Ikura, and fatty tuna!
5. Thank you for graciously allowing me to come and visit your community! I wish to leave the program with an enriched sense of Japanese culture and many new friends. I hope that I can contribute artistically to your community and leave with a sense of accomplishment and happiness!
