Akiko Ban

Born in Tokyo, 1975. Graduated from the Department of English, Faculty of Letters at Meiji Gakuin University in 1998. Moved to England in 2002. Graduated with a BA in Drawing at Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London in 2006. Received an MFA in Sculpture from the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London in 2008. Akiko Ban is a contemporary artist based in London who works mainly with drawing and sculptures. She expresses her primitive view of the world through a variety of materials such as liquid, plaster, and rubber. Her method of creating works that utilize the spirit of “nothingness” is unique to her as a calligrapher, and she has created a new mythology that projects the world around her into it. Her work, which is both mystical and contemporary, is a “ritual” to exalt her own spirit.
