2023.10 - 2024.01

LONGSTAY Program 2022-23 “PUZZLING POLY+SEMY” held the exhibition at Sunsun Garden, Matsudo 3-chome West Community Hall.
Yuki opened the exhibition room to the public as a “Magic Research Agency” which is constructed with materials based on the “magic” research conducted during the residency, and (enormous!) photographs of Matsudo’s landscape, showing ordinary intersections, vacant lots, the Edogawa River, etc. In addition, photographs documenting the project “Thinking about Magic in Matsudo,” which was held at the open studio in November, were also exhibited. A quaint room in a local community building was transformed into an agency that explores the world of the unusual, and the diverse archives reflected through her (the agent’s) perspective were lined up. Each of the exhibited records was rearranged by Yuki’s hand over time, just like putting together the pieces of a puzzle, and new multiple stories seemed to be generated from her free ideas.
Hands and Face conducted a wide range of fieldwork with “hometown” as a keyword during their stay. These included a survey and collection of letters from foreign residents of Matsudo City, as well as a workshop at the art club in Matsudo Daiichi Junior High School, where participants engaged in dialogue using their hands, bodies, and writings.
On the tables placed in the exhibition room, visitors can read an archive of these activities and a newly written textbook “Rolling Motherland (2023),” a project practiced in Matsudo. The video projected on the big screen was composed of a woman practicing tai chi in Matsudo, recordings of workshops and texts. It seemed to gently question us about the ideal form of community, depicting once again the coexistence of many people of different cultures and nationalities in Matsudo.
The two artists took different approaches to their work, but took the keywords they brought with them as a starting point and sincerely confronted the people living there and the landscape in front of them in the present, giving us a new perspective on daily life in Matsudo.
