Make yourself at home, why don’t you?｜P_E_A_K_A_Y_

UK- and Austria-based collective P_E_A_K_A_Y_ will be showing a one-night-only hotel room installation at PARADISE AIR on Tuesday 27 June 2023.

Room no. 401 of the former hotel-now-artist hotel lies at the center of a series of research works. A story is narrated primarily through objects installed in the room which has served as the artists’ home for the past three weeks. The trinkets stem from a collection of the memories of past homes and temporary spaces, both of the artists yet also of others, including participants of a workshop on drawing from shared memory P_E_A_K_A_Y_ hosted in May in Yamanashi prefecture.

 

The exhibition was held in the room where the girls actually stayed, and was intended to show the creations of their stay in Japan, which they experienced between March and June. In this small exhibition consisting of drawings, sculptures, videos, and entrance mats, familiar objects that the girls saw during their stay were transformed into kitschy forms and output by the two P_E_A_K_A_Y_ artists. The title of the exhibition, “Make yourself at home, why don’t you? reflects the relaxed mood of the two artists’ stay at PARADISE AIR.

Artist Statement

During the last four months they spent in Japan, P_E_A_K_A_Y_’s (Klara Vith and Paul Wardski) research focused on living and working in temporary spaces. Moving around frequently and attending residencies, their living situation and environment continually changed, presenting starting points for interventions and reflections on domestic space. These reflections often center on objects placed in spaces as tokens of memory or outward projections of values and interests.
