Giant Diner was held in the Hachinohe Art Museum’s Giant Room in June 2022.
This project, which made full use of the Giant Room, one of the Hachinohe Art Museum’s most distinctive features, was a great success, drawing a total of approximately 4,000 visitors in a single day.
In this event, we reported on the day of the “Giant Diner” through an exhibition and public talks.

Who, what, and how would it be archived?
The “Giant Diner” was a 13-hour-long performance that was also enjoyed as an event. Who, what, and how should the one-day performance be documented?
Focus on the Hachinohe Art Museum concept “Unlike conventional art museums, which focus on exhibiting artworks as objects, this museum aims to create a new culture and revitalize Hachinohe City by providing a large space for people to engage in activities that generate new artworks and new art experiences.” Kato and Tomita, who have documented various projects, and Hijikata, who has done installations not only in the field of art but also in various other fields, discussed the archiving of Giant Diner and the archiving of “activities”.

Facilitator: Saori Azuma (ima theater)

Talk 2: 17:30-19:00
Do we create a place for an artwork or create an artwork from a place?
How was “Giant Diner” created, and how was the Giant Room viewed and planned?
We invited Yamauchi of the Hachinohe Art Museum, Mori, one of the co-designers of the Hachinohe Art Museum who worked on the installation of the Giant Diner, and Miyazaki, an architect based in Tokyo, to discuss the Giant Diner and the Giant Room. They discussed the Giant Diner and the Giant Room openly and frankly, including comparisons with other examples.

Facilitator: Miho Inatsugu (ima theater)
Appearance: Mitsuyoshi Miyazaki (Architect, HAGI STUDIO), Junpei Mori (Architect), Rena Yamauchi (Hachinohe Art Museum), Tomo Yamazaki (ima theater)
