Known for its radical “mistranslations” of Western and Eastern classics into contemporary everyday settings, Shigeki Nakano + Frankens returned to Festival/Tokyo for the first time in four years. The setting of this new work, based on the period novel “The Curious Casebook of Inspector Hanshichi,” which is rich in Edo sentiment, is Matsudo in Chiba Prefecture, one river away from Tokyo. The audience follows a mystery surrounding a case and travels to several locations in the city. The key players are Hanshichi, an Edo master, and Kidori, a man from Matsudo who admires him. One day, Kidori (8/2), who, as his name implies, split everything clearly, is visited from Edo by Hanshichi (7/2) with the long face…
