UK/Japan Digital Artist Residency Exchange
DRS(Manchester)、M T HALL(Liverpool)、Torus Vil. [Kimiya Sato+Mayu Gonto](Nagano and Matsumoto)
Programme period: Thursday, February 25th, 2021- Friday, March 12th

Samarbeta, Metal in the UK and PARADISE AIR organised music residencies with DRS (Manchester, UK), M T HALL (Liverpool, UK) and Torus Vil. [Kimiya Sato + Mayu Gonto] (Nagano and Matsumoto).
A video of an online talk reflecting on the collaborative production process during the residency and the creative environment and interactions of each artist, together with a piece of music that emerged from the programme’s collaborations, is available for viewing.

This online residency exchange programme is conducted per the guidelines for COVID-19.
The three artists in each city were from home, and it was during a period when restrictions on travel were lifted in Japan, Torus Vil. [Kimiya Sato + Mayu Gongtou] conducted a residency at PARADISE AIR for a part of the period.

The programme focused on artists sharing ideas and building relationships with each other in situations where face-to-face interaction is difficult. Working with their residencies and digital research consultants, the artists explored smooth communication on digital platforms, created works together, performed works in progress and collaborated on music production between different cities and in different time zones.

The three residences have partnered together for the first time, despite the crisis impact of global pandemics and climate change.
We believe this programme has presented one new model for international artist exchange and collaboration through residencies.

Samarbeta
Samarbeta is a project born from the minds of Emma Thompson (Fat Out) and Rivca Burns (Sounds from the Other City). Both Emma and Rivca have worked together at Islington Mill for over three years and have worked with many artists through the residency programme there. From there, the question arose as to why there were no music-focused residencies, and Samarbeta was founded at the end of 2013. Samarbeta’s residency programme is an innovative way of encouraging the creation of new and adventurous music, as well as bringing musicians together and creating collaborations. This may not have been possible without the residency.

Metal
Metal was founded in London in 2002 by Jude Kelly CBE, working with Colette Bailey, the current artistic director and CEO. Since 2004, the residency has been active in Liverpool, since 2007 in Southend-on-Sea and since 2012 in Peterborough. Based in these centres, the project aims to explore the impact of art and artist practice on citizens and civil society, and to create opportunities for transforming the potential of people and places. Metal produces an exciting and multi-disciplinary programme of residencies for international and UK artists, and a wide range of events, exhibitions and participatory projects. Recent notable Metal Liverpool projects include the Turner Prize-winning project “Granby Workshop” with artist collective Assemble, and Different Trains with Steve Reich, the London Contemporary Orchestra and film director Bill Morrison.
