Artist Ivana Tkalcic, who stayed in by the SHORTSTAY program in June 2024, gave an artist talk in the Matsudo Civic Hall Planetarium Room.

She explores the fusion of space exploration and art in her work, drawing from her experience at the Analog Astronaut Training Centre in Poland. Tkalcic did a presentation about practical insights into life in space and her artistic journey.

This was the first time that PARADISE AIR has used the planetarium room as an event venue. We were pleased to be able to hold this event at the most appropriate location in Matsudo to share the story of her experience as an artist of the “simulation camp for space life” featured in the manga “Space Brothers”.
The planetarium room, which opened in 1978, still has the same equipment as it did then, and astronaut Naoko Yamazaki serves as honorary director, and is still loved by local residents today. Through her activities, Matsudo’s culture and art intersected, creating a moment that transcended location and reminded us of our own adventures into space.

Artist Statement

The artist talk will focus on the project “Astronaut(s) without a Spaceship” and will share my experience at the Analog Astronaut Training Centre in Poland, which is part of ESA’s ILEWG EuroMoonMars initiative. This talk will delve into the concept of spaceexploration, examining the intersection between art and science.

I will share insights from my intensive week-long participation in astronaut training, which involved a demanding simulation of life on a lunar station. This simulation included elements such as reduced oxygen environments, lack of sunlight, limited resources, and continuous work schedules, providing a realistic experience of life in space.

During the talk, I will also discuss the artistic research conducted during and after the training. This research focused on integrating artistic practices with scientific exploration.

By highlighting these experiences and research outcomes, the talk will offer a unique perspective on the experience of a moon life simulation.
